Offsetting Emissions

The problem with offsetting our emissions is that carbon we emit now won't be absorbed for up to 80 years. If everyone attempted to offset our emissions, we don't have enough land space in Australia or Internationally to absorb all the carbon emitted. This is related to the problems with biofuels.

Furthermore, there is no policing of the activities so we cannot guarantee that trees are being planted, although I'm sure many of the companies are legitimate.

To solve the climate change problem, we need to change our transport modes to those that are carbon free or much lower in carbon emissions.

The benefit of offsetting some of your emissions is that it is creating awareness of the problem and these offsetting programs support many tree planting projects that really need to be supported in Australia and internationally. If we keep loosing our trees, forests and bushland through landclearing, our species will not survive. In a way, offsetting is a voluntary carbon tax, which is valuable as our current carbon tax or trading schemes are still in there infancy.
